It was directed by Ash Brannon and Chris Buck from a screenplay they co-wrote with Don Rhymer and producer Chris Jenkins, based on a story by Jenkins and Christian Darren.

Surf's Up. Come join Cody (Shia LaBeouf), a Rockhopper penguin, as he journeys from his home in Shiverpool, Antarctica, to take part in the Big Z Memorial Surf-Off on the beach of Pen Gu Island. During his adventure he meets some new friends, including surf nut Chicken Joe (Jon Heder) and the spirited lifeguard Lani (Zooey Deschanel).
A couple of unseen filmmakers ( Ash Brannon and Chris Buck) arrive in Shiverpool, a small fishing village inhabited by rockhopper penguins in Antarctica, to document the life of a teen surfer named Cody Maverick ( Shia LaBeouf ).
