With the war going badly for Japan, Kurosawa wrote and directed an upbeat sequel to his first hit, Sanshiro Sugata Part Two (Zoku Sugata Sanshiro). The first film ended on a rather open-ended note with Sugata on a train to his future, so Part Two confects a new pair of conflicts.
