A Day at the Beach is a 1970 British film based on the 1962 book Een dagje naar het strand by Dutch author Heere Heeresma. The screenplay was written by Roman Polanski, who was originally intended to be the director, although most of the direction was finally done by first-timer Simon Hesera.

"A Day at the Beach" is a rather grim and simple tale of an incredibly irresponsible jerk who takes his niece for a day. While this little girl idolizes him, he's obviously an alcoholic, deals with underworld types, is a habitual liar and has few, if any, qualities you can admire.
A Day at the Beach plot. Bernie (Mark Burns), an alcoholic who stumbles through life without purpose, arrives with his daughter Winnie (Beatie Edney) at a seaside resort. Immediately, Bernie reaches for the bottle again, while his daughter, who is handicapped by her legs, becomes increasingly concerned for her father's health.
