Aug 10, 2023 · Based on a New Yorker article and a book, the six-episode series traces the origin and impact of the opioid epidemic in America. It follows the stories of a U.S. attorney, a mechanic, a salesperson, and the Sackler family, the owners of Purdue Pharma.
The Painkiller cast includes Uzo Aduba, Matthew Broderick, Taylor Kitsch, West Duchovny, Dina Shihabi, John Rothman and Tyler Ritter. The limited series about the opioid crisis premieres on Netflix Aug. 10.

Richard Sackler is vilified over the prescription of OxyContin to patients who need to manage pain and to drug addicts. Arthur Sackler, Richard's uncle, is accused of wanting to sell OxyContin to as many people as possible to increase profits for his company, Purdue Pharma.
