Roswitha (Rosel Zech), a lonely immigrant, works in the library of a small Alaskan town. When ill-mannered, sexually ambiguous Eskimo Kotzebue (k.d. lang) rudely disrupts her work, Roswitha refuses to help the strange woman research her family history. But as Kotzebue's repeated visits to the library begin to wear her down, Roswitha relents.
