As sisters Emily (Ida Lupino), Charlotte (Olivia de Havilland) and Anne Brontë (Nancy Coleman) all work on their novels, they each face their own series of tragedies. Both Charlotte and Anne fall in love with handsome Arthur Nicholls (Paul Henreid), and Emily struggles to keep their troubled brother, Branwell (Arthur Kennedy), away from the bottle so he can focus on his painting.
