Plot. In Paris, during the Reign of Terror, the incarcerated Marquis de Sade pens a story about Mademoiselle Renard, a young aristocrat who meets him. Years later, the Marquis is confined to the asylum for the insane at Charenton, overseen by the Abbé du Coulmier.
A nobleman with a literary flair, the Marquis de Sade lives in a madhouse where a beautiful laundry maid smuggles his erotic stories to a printer, defying orders from the asylum's resident priest. The titillating passages whip all of France into a sexual frenzy, until a fiercely conservative doctor tries to put an end to the fun.

In 1801, at 61, after 27 years spent in various prisons, he is sealed up in the insane asylum at Charenton.
