After his wife, Clarissa (Barbara Bel Geddes), accuses him of being incapable of love, prominent Massachusetts lawyer Arthur Winner (Efrem Zimbalist Jr.) begins a torrid affair with the alcoholic spouse (Lana Turner) of his sexually disabled business partner Julius Penrose (Jason Robards Jr.).
