Grain silo continues to burn at Bomaderry, fire crews work to limit explosion risk

Fire and Rescue New South Wales is continuing to work to extinguish a silo fire at a food manufacturing facility in Bomaderry near Nowra on the South Coast.Fifteen people had to be evacuated from the Manildra plant yesterday.Superintendent Greg Wright from Fire and Rescue NSW said firefighters were trying to work out how to stop the grain from burning."Bolong Road remains closed in both directions," he said."Businesses in and around that area won't be able to access their businesses and the community are reminded to remain clear of the location whilst firefighters develop a plan on how to extinguish this fire inside the silo."Hazmat teams and drones have been deployed in addition to regular fire crews.Superintendent Wright said precautions were being taken to prevent a potential explosion."We just need to be careful how we attack the fire to ensure that we don't have a dust explosion," he said."There are a number of options that are being discussed with onsite engineers for Fire and Rescue NSW, a scientific officer, hazmat teams, and firefighters."Firefighters are moving a container of carbon dioxide to the area.Inspector Rick Jones said the decision came after consultation with a Fire and Rescue scientific officer and staff Manildra plant staff."The plan today is to pump the top of the silo with carbon dioxide, which will minimise the risk of any potential dust explosion," he said."Once we have that in place we can begin to engineer a solution to remove the product from the base of the silo."Ron Arthur from Nowra Truck and Tractor said he could not get to work today."Currently they have got the road closed at the roundabout at Bolong Road and Meroo Street and there is no access to businesses in Railway Street or Bolong Road," he said."So all those businesses currently can't operate, so staff may as well not come to work at this point in time."Manildra has released a statement saying the site was evacuated following an isolated smouldering incident in a silo containing pelletised stockfeed."All employees have been evacuated and no employees were injured," a spokesperson said."The site has been closed until further notice."The company said its onsite team was working with Fire and Rescue NSW to remove smouldering product, but there was no timeline on when the operation would be completed.
