The character was created by Stan Lee and John Romita Sr., and first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #50 (cover-dated July 1967). The "Kingpin" name is a reference to the crime lord title in Mafia slang nomenclature.

Kingpin is a 1996 American sports comedy film directed by Peter and Bobby Farrelly and written by Barry Fanaro and Mort Nathan. Starring Woody Harrelson, Randy Quaid, Vanessa Angel and Bill Murray, it tells the story of an alcoholic ex-professional bowler (Harrelson) who becomes the manager for a promising Amish talent (Quaid).
Kingpin is the first Marvel Cinematic Universe character introduced in Daredevil to subsequently appear in a Marvel Studios production. Kingpin has the distinction of being the only character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to be the main antagonist in both a Marvel Studios and a Marvel Television project.
