    • Understand the benefits of freshman orientation. Generally, freshman orientation programs are designed to help ease your transition from high school to college.
    • Complete any “pre-orientation” tasks. Colleges usually post a pre-orientation “checklist” on their websites, or they might send information about orientation to you via email.
    • Review the course catalog. Some orientation programs include registering for classes and meeting with an academic advisor. Before orientation, take a look at the course catalog and write down the classes you want to take, plus any questions you might have about degree requirements or your academic plan.
    • Stick to the program. Some parts of orientation might not be mandatory, but most college advisors encourage students to attend the entire program. Whether in-person or online, a session that sounds uninteresting might contain information about resources or services that you didn’t know existed (or know you needed), or be the place where you connect with a future friend.
    • Don’t Be Too Cool. An orientation involves a scheduled program of events and activities. While following the agenda is optional, Courtlyn Patrick, a former orientation leader and graduate of Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, recommends sticking to the program.
    • Ask Questions. At freshman orientation, you’ll be surrounded by people whose main goal is to give you information. So take advantage and ask your questions, “no matter how silly you may think they are,” Natale says.
    • Explore, On and Off Campus. Learn everything you can about the campus. “On your free time, walk around and explore your new home for the next four years.
    • Take Notes. Freshman orientation is a lot of information at once. You want to remember as much of it as possible, and with new-student nerves, you may not absorb it all right away.
