Ragtime was one of the most popular forms of music in the United States between 1897 and 1917. Rooted in African American folk dance traditions, it evolved in the decades after emancipation, incorporating both African and European musical elements.
Ragtime was instrumental in bringing the music of African Americans to the attention of the entire country. In the later 1800s the cakewalk was finding its way into Minstrel Shows and Vaudeville. It was, unfortunately, presented along racial lines and profoundly derogatory.
