- Donating. Donating old garments to charity thrift stores near you, such as Goodwill and The Salvation Army, might be the most obvious clothes recycling option.
- Selling. Make a quick buck (and save the planet!) by selling your gently used clothes at brick-and-mortar thrift stores or the best places to sell clothes or old stuff online.
- Textile recycling. While clothes don’t belong in recycling bins, they can be recycled in other ways. Textile recycling centers accept and sort garments that are not in good enough condition to donate or sell, like stained and torn items.
- Composting. Believe it or not, clothes and other textiles make great composting material! Look for natural fiber items made of pure wool, cotton, silk, or linen that are too old or damaged to donate, and cut them into small pieces to speed up the composting process.
- Crop tops. Remove a few inches off the bottom of an old top to transform it. If a piece of clothing is no longer in, don’t be quick to say it’s out.
- Denim shorts. Remove the legs of jeans or pants to turn them into shorts. Using the same technique as cropping a shirt, you can make cropped denim shorts.
- Embellishments. Add charms, pockets, or gemstones to upgrade an old garment. If you have charms or gemstones, you can use these to give old clothes a bedazzling!
- Dye. Give an old garment new life by changing the color. Add vibrancy to a faded garment or dye the fabric a totally different color. Grab your choice of fabric dye and mix 4 fluid ounces (120 mL) of dye with 3 gallons (11 L) of hot water per 1 pound (0.45 kg) of fabric.
