Rupert Kinnard created the Brown Bomber in 1976. In 1977, an editorial comic strip featuring B.B. debuted in Cornell College's student newspaper and ran weekly for two years. The Brown Bomber debuted in the Portland OR queer publication, Just Out and Diva Touché Flambé joined the comic, Cathartic Comics in 1984.
The road for queer comics from the Underground Comix scene to mainstream acceptance was fraught with challenges. No Straight Lines traces the stories of five scrappy cartoonists (Alison Bechdel, Jen Camper, Howard Cruse, Rupert Kinnard, and Mary Wings) from their early DIY work to the international stage, and offers a window into the hopes, fears, and fantasies of LGBTQ+ people across the U.S.
