In 18th-century Japan, aging yakuza crime lord Gomyo (Tatsuya Nakadai) hopes to make a peaceful exit from the seedy lifestyle he's been maintaining, but, with threats coming from outsiders and those within his own clan of crooks, he realizes he will need a fierce bodyguard.
