Feb 2, 2021 · Around 1600 AD, European pirates brought advanced sailing and shipbuilding techniques to the Barbary Coast, which enabled the corsairs to extend their activities into the Atlantic Ocean, and the impact of Barbary raids peaked in the early to mid-17th century.
The Barbary pirates, Barbary corsairs, or Ottoman corsairs were mainly Muslim pirates and privateers who operated from the Barbary states. This area was known in Europe as the Barbary Coast, in reference to the Berbers. Slaves in Barbary could be of many ethnicities, and of many different religions, such as Christian, Jewish, or Muslim.
Barbary pirate, any of the Muslim pirates operating from the coast of North Africa, most powerful during the 17th century but still active until the 19th century. They gained political significance during the 16th century, when Barbarossa united Algeria and Tunisia as military states under the Ottoman sultanate.

The Barbary Coast, or Berber Coast, was the land of the Berber people. It was the name used by Europeans from the 16th to the 19th century. It was the coast of North Africa – what is now Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya. This area was used by pirates. They attacked ships and coastal towns.
