  2. May 16, 2023 · Hating your job can be detrimental to your physical and mental wellbeing, but most people can’t afford to quit right away. Here’s how to cope with a job you hate until you can leave.

    • Pause and reflect. The first and one of the most important steps is to take inventory of your situation. Oftentimes when you’re in a less than desirable situation, it’s easy to keep going through the motions.
    • Examine your personal values. If you loathe your job, what is it about your current position that makes you miserable? Take a look at the list you just wrote.
    • Pinpoint what you dislike about your current job. Now that you’ve reflected on your current experience and your value system, it’s time to identify exactly what you dislike.
    • Network with people. If you hate your job, it’s likely you’ve considered making a change. Should you quit your job? Should you try to look internally at other positions?

    • Assess Your Situation. It seems obvious, doesn’t it? But, it’s a step that’s often overlooked. We all have the tendency to get so wrapped up in how miserable we are, that we neglect to determine what exactly is causing that unhappiness.
    • Have the Tough Conversations. Once you’ve identified what exactly is inspiring your distaste for your position, it’s time to have those difficult conversations with the powers that be.
    • Switch Your Perspective. “Stay positive!” is another cliché piece of career advice you hear time and time again when you hate your current position. And, I’m trying my best to stay away from that same tired sentiment.
    • Vent About It. You know not to rant and rave about how much you hate your job on Facebook—that’s definitely not advisable. But, that doesn’t mean you’re not allowed to ever air any grievances about your career.
