"The Lady's Not for Burning" is a world-weary play about the darkness of the human soul, and about the grace that sometimes shines through that darkness and blesses the ones it shines upon. The setting is a generic town in the generic middle ages.
I am fortunate to have made a video of this broadcast so I am not speaking from memory.The title role (ie "the lady") is played perfectly by Cherie Lunghi who is superbly supported by Kenneth Brannagh.At that time these were 2 of Britain's foremost actors.Their scenes together are superb.Full justice is done to the witty & graceful dialogue.This is not a play for those who prefer action to talk.
Christopher Fry's The Lady's Not for Burning is a play about a man named Thomas Mendip. Thomas is a discharged soldier who wants to commit suicide but ultimately doesn't. Later on, Thomas meets with the mayor and is about to hang himself but, after much discussion, he decides not too the mayor says that he must claim the two people he killed.
