The plot of Grace and Glorie revolves around a couple who move from New York City to a rural location where the couple become acquainted with an elderly, illiterate woman named Grace Stiles (Gena Rowlands).
When Grace Stiles and her grandson Roy are swindled out of the family farm by a crooked land developer, Grace is forced to live in a primitive cottage on the property. Roy soon realizes that he is unable to give Grace the constant care she requires because of the demands of his new job.
Grace, a feisty 90 year-old cancer patient, has checked herself out of the hospital and returned to her beloved homestead cottage to die alone. Her volunteer hospice worker, Glorie, is a Harvard MBA recently transplanted to this rural backwater from New York.
