That Was Then, This Is Now Summary. In Tulsa, Oklahoma, in the late 1960s, 16-year-old Bryon Douglas lives with his mother and his foster brother and best friend, Mark Jennings. Mark’s parents killed each other in a drunken fight when he was younger, and he’s lived with Bryon and Bryon’s mother ever since.
