The film follows the fate of a group of refugees from the Holocaust who are illegally brought to Israel by the Palmach. When they arrive, they are chased by British soldiers. Once they escape, they are immediately drafted into the war, and take part in a grueling battle against Arab irregulars.
Rescued from a British army ambush at beachside by Palmach Jewish guerillas, the Kedma's ragged refugees are remade into soldiers expected to offer their lives to defend a nation that does not yet exist in a land they've never known.

Set seven days before the creation of the state of Israel in May 1948, a small rusted ship, transporting a group of expectant concentration camp survivors from Shoah, approaches a hostile new territory.
The Kedma, a European cargo freighter is packed with concentration camp survivors heading towards Palestine. As underground Jewish forces prepare for its arrival, the British soldiers position themselves to stop the Kedma's unauthorized landing.
