The film stars Barbara Stanwyck and Burt Lancaster. It follows a bedridden woman who overhears the plot of murder while on the telephone.
In New York, Leona Stevenson, the invalid wife of Henry J. Stevenson, the VP of a pharmaceutical industry, becomes aware of a murder that would be committed late that night through a "cross-wire", when she overhears two men planning the murder.
