I go on like this because "Cannonball" goes on like that. It tries for the greatest realism in its obligatory shots of gas tanks exploding, and yet includes such absurdities as a local news helicopter that tracks all of the competitors all the way from LA to New York.

This movie, the Gumball Rally, and Cannonball Run were all based on the same series of real-life, outlaw cross country road races, known as the "Cannonball Baker Sea-to-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash" (the name was deliberately long, as to be waggish).
