While owner George Bater (Keenan Wynn), cook Slob (Lee Marvin) and waitress Kotty (Terry Moore) go about their workday, their diner near the highway becomes a haven for international espionage during the Cold War. One of the diner's regular customers is professor Sam Bastion (Frank Lovejoy), who works at a local laboratory as a nuclear physicist.
