Jun 19, 1971 · Wild Rovers: Directed by Blake Edwards. With William Holden, Ryan O'Neal, Karl Malden, Lynn Carlin. Tired of cow-punching for a living, two Montana cowboys rob a bank and flee but their employer's sons chase after them.
Wild Rovers is a 1971 American Western film directed by Blake Edwards and starring William Holden and Ryan O'Neal. Originally intended as a three-hour epic, it was heavily edited by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer without Edwards' knowledge, including a reversal of the ending from a negative one to a positive.
"The Wild Rovers" is the most gently and feelingly photographed Western in a long time. Edwards and Lathrop create a society centered around a proud ranch, presided over by the (as always) ethical Karl Malden , and peopled with realistic cowboys, wives, sons and even (in the nearby town) a real saloonkeeper.
