Sorrell and Son is a 1927 American silent drama film released on December 2, 1927 and nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director at the 1st Academy Awards the following year. The film was based on the 1925 novel of the same name by Warwick Deeping , Sorrell and Son , which became and remained a bestseller throughout the 1920s and 1930s.

Novel. Stephen Sorrell, a decorated war hero, raises his son Kit alone after Kit's mother deserts husband and child in the boy's infancy. Sorrell loses a promising job offer and is forced to take work as a menial. Both his dignity and his health are damaged as he suffers under the exhausting labor and harsh treatment he receives as a hotel porter.
He then begins a life-long battle to endure the privations that have been thrust upon him and his infant son, Kit, striving to retain honor and grace through it all. He is humiliated and vamped by coarse innkeeper Flo Palfrey, who delights in the irony of his debasement; but Sorrell walks out on her temptations and is fired.
