A film about the Spanish Civil War made and released while the conflict was still raging, Blockade (1938) was quite controversial in its day. It was protested as leftist propaganda in some quarters, condemned by the Catholic Church, and even banned in some American cities (all of which helped it at the box office, of course).

1. The comedy was sheepish. 2. The political aspect was sheepish. 3. A sheep would have been better cast in Henry Fonda's role. Henry Fonda was just not right for the part of a Spanish peasant. The acting was comically melodramatic and the dialogue was corny. Also the romance with Madeleine Carroll felt out of place.
