Star lawyer Matlock (Andy Griffith) is back in the town he grew up in for a family reunion when a pal of his nephew's son is found dead. Matlock defends Russ Gifford (Cyril O'Reilly), a known enemy of the deceased who is accused of the crime. He's also proving unpopular with the locals in town who think he's become too full of himself. When a second man is killed, Matlock gets help from Conrad (Clarence Gilyard Jr.), who investigates the significance of a mysterious tattoo.
