Edward Dmytryk's "Shalako" is a disappointment from this veteran action director, whose recent "Anzio" was a cut above most war epics. This time Dmytryk dissipates the tension, despite the presence in his cast of two formidable symbols of one thing or another: Sean Connery and Brigitte Bardot.
Based on a book by the prolific Western novelist Louis L'Amour, Shalako (1968) had the makings of a classic frontier epic, including a unique premise that was rarely explored in Westerns: the confrontation between European civilization and the untamed wilderness and desolation of the American West.
