Thunder Rock is a 1939 play by Robert Ardrey. The initial Broadway production, put on by the Group Theater and directed by Elia Kazan, closed after a short run, but the play was far more successful in wartime London. Thunder Rock became a symbol of British resistance and was the most notable play of World War II.

Thunder Rock stars Michael Redgrave as the protagonist and features James Mason in the secondary role as Streeter. Redgrave excelled at playing neurotic but sympathetic idealists, and crusading journalist David Charleston fit his star image.
David Charleston, once a world renowned journalist, now lives alone maintaining the Thunder Rock lighthouse in Lake Michigan. He doesn't cash his paychecks and has no contact other than the monthly inspector's visit. When alone, he imagines conversations with those who died when a 19th century packet ship with some 60 passengers sank.
