Both Catholicism and Church of England have this tradition. “Pocket Full of Posies” — explained to me as stuffing the pockets of the dead with flowers to help ward off stench, but may also be a reference to “Posie rings” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Posie_ring)
