    Shameful Secrets is a 1993 American television drama\thriller film directed by David Carson.

    The film aired on October 10, 1993 on the ABC network.

    The film follows Maryanne Walker-Tate (Joanna Kerns), a woman who finds herself in a custody battle with her abusive husband, Daniel (Tim Matheson). When Daniel turns his abusive behavior towards their children (Justin Isfeld and Ashley Peldon), Maryann decides to take them into hiding.

    "Shameful Secrets" was inspired by a resolution sponsored by Maryland politician Connie Morella in 1989 called Resolution 172 which urges judges to take into consideration a parent's history of abuse against his or her spouse when deciding a child custody case.

    According to the Washington Post, the character of Maryanne Walker-Tate is a composite based on women that writer Stephanie Liss met at shelters for battered women in California and Maryland.

    Liss said that she was asked to write the screenplay for "Shameful Secrets" by executive producer Steven White, who had become interested in Morella's resolution. She also visited & slept overnight at shelters, spoke to men who had beaten their partners and spoke to women who decided to adopt new identities for themselves & their children.

    Liss also often remained on the set during filming. She recalled:

    To prepare for the role of Maryanne and with the encouragement of director David Carson, Joanna Kerns listened to women in therapy groups and shelters in Pasadena & Santa Monica, California talk about their experiences. She also visited women who have been incarcerated for murdering their abusive spouses.

    Tim Matheson prepared for the role of Daniel by attending therapy groups for batterers.
