Umrao Jaan Ada (Urdu: اُمراؤ جان ادا) is an Urdu novel by Mirza Hadi Ruswa (1857–1931), first published in 1899. It is considered the first Urdu novel by many [2] and tells the story of a tawaif and poet by the same name from 19th century Lucknow , as recounted by her to the author.
Based on Mirza Muhammad Hadi Ruswa's novel, the film tells the story of Umrao Jaan, a girl abducted and sold to a brothel in 1840s British India. She becomes a famous poetess and dancer, but faces many hardships and tragedies in her life.
