Sunak and Starmer clash in testy final UK TV debate
Reuters Videos22 minutes agoSTORY: Britain's final debate before next week's general election was a testy standoff with current Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, whose party is trailing in the polls going head-to-head with Keir Starmer, leader of the Labour Party. Polling puts Labour far ahead of Sunak's Conservatives, by around 20 points, and on Wednesday, the prime minister made a last-ditch attack on Starmer, accusing him of being dishonest on issues from tax and women’s rights to immigration. Starmer fired back saying that Sunak was too rich to understand the concerns of most ordinary Britons. A snap YouGov poll said the debate had been a 50/50 tie. "They cannot be returned to where they came from, can they, Prime Minister, if he wants to correct that, now is his chance to do that" On immigration – a top concern for British voters, Sunak rejected Starmer’s argument that he would try and return migrants to their home countries saying many are from Iran, Syria and Afganistan: “Are you going to sit down with the Iranian ayatollahs? Are you going to try and do a deal with the Taliban? It's completely nonsensical what you are saying, right? You are taking people for fools. I think that these people should not stay in our country. They will be on planes to Rwanda.” Starmer also argued the country was exhausted after 14 years of Conservative "chaos", and that he would better understand the challenges of many families who have struggled under soaring inflation and a cost of living crisis. Polls indicate Labour are on course to win the election with a whopping majority. Sunak's campaign has struggled since the beginning. He launched the election in pouring rain in Downing Street and was heavily criticized for failing to attend a D-Day memorial event. Sir Keir Starmer also attacked the prime minister over a recent betting scandal, which saw five Conservative party officials investigated over bets that were placed on the timing of an early election: "Because this isn't just, you know, what's happened this week, last week in the Gambling Commission, we saw Partygate earlier in this parliament. The prime minister himself was convicted and fined for breaking the rules, which he brought in and imposed on everybody else.” However Starmer has also faced criticism at public events, too. He's been accused by voters of sticking to a script and being robotic, and failing to give enough information on how he would fund much-needed improvements to public services. Ballot boxes open on July 4th.

- 2:08Bolivia coup fails, top general arrestedReuters VideosSTORY: What appeared to be a coup attempt in Bolivia failed on Wednesday. A top general leading armed forces allied to him tried to storm the presidential palace in La Paz, with eyewitness video showing an armored vehicle ram palace doors and soldiers rush in. But they quickly pulled back in the evening, and the general, Juan Jose Zuniga, was arrested hours later on live TV, taken away, and later, replaced. A Reuters witness saw soldiers withdraw from the central Plaza Murillo square, home to the presidential palace and Congress. People continued to gather, heeding an earlier call from President Luis Arce to resist the coup attempt. "This is a historic afternoon. Not just because the people have re-taken Plaza Murillo but because of a failed coup attempt. I believe the Bolivian people should be at ease. All Bolivians are uniting." Arce himself later appeared from a balcony and thanked the public. "It fills us with bravery, courage to keep resisting to keep on resisting any coup attempt. because Bolivia deserves its democracy, which has been won in the streets, and with blood brothers and sisters." The President later swore in José Wilson Sanchez as the military commander to replace Zuniga, and called for calm and order to be restored. Tension is building in Bolivia ahead of general elections next year. Zuniga has recently hit out at leftist ex-President Evo Morales, saying he should not be allowed to return and threatening to block him if he does. Morales is planning a return to power by running against Arce, his onetime socialist ally. Zuniga had also spoken to reporters in the square saying that anger was growing in the landlocked country... Bolivia has been battling an economic slump with depleted central bank reserves as well as pressure on the boliviano currency as exports of gas dry up. The public prosecutor's office said it would launch a criminal investigation against Zuniga and others involved in the attempted coup.2 hours ago

- 1:44Bolivia’s president says military attempted coupReuters VideosSTORY: Heavily armed Bolivian soldiers and armored vehicles took over the capital's central square Wednesday, home to the presidential palace and Congress, in what the country's president called an attempted coup. As troops surrounded Plaza Murillo, a military commander can be heard telling soldiers to "stand firm." Bolivian President Luis Arce demanded the military action be called off, denouncing what he called an "irregular mobilization" of some army units in La Paz. In a video posted on Facebook, Arce addressed the nation alongside government officials, calling on citizens to “mobilize” for democracy and against the coup. According to a Reuters witness, an armored vehicle rammed into a door of the presidential palace and soldiers rushed in. Former leader Evo Morales, who has publicly split with Arce although both belong to the same socialist movement, accused top General Juan Jose Zuniga of plotting a coup. Tensions have been building in Bolivia ahead of the general elections in 2025, with Morales planning to run against Arce, creating a rift in the ruling socialist party and wider political uncertainty. Many do not want a return of Morales, who governed from 2006-2019 when he was ousted amongst widespread protests and replaced by an interim conservative government. Arce then won election in 2020. The landlocked South American country is also battling an economic slump with depleted central bank reserves and pressure on the boliviano currency as gas exports have dried up. The United States said it was closely monitoring the situation and urged calm and restraint.8 hours ago

- 1:17Why is Julian Assange flying to the remote island of Saipan?Reuters VideosSTORY: It's known for its idyllic sandy beaches, and now a major U.S. espionage court case. WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is heading to the tiny Pacific island of Saipan. His appearance at a courtroom there could end his 14-year legal saga. Assange is expected to plead guilty to a single criminal charge in a deal that will allow him to return home to Australia. :: Where is Saipan? Saipan is the capital of the Northern Mariana Islands, a U.S. Commonwealth in the western Pacific. Like Guam and Puerto Rico, the group of 14 islands are part of the U.S. but without full state status. The roughly 51,000 residents are U.S. citizens but cannot vote in presidential elections. :: Why is Assange heading there? Some Northern Mariana Islands, like Saipan, host U.S. district courts. Prosecutors say Assange wanted to go to a court close to his home of Australia but not on the continental U.S.. Here's the governor of the Northern Mariana Islands Arnold Palacios. :: Arnold Palacios, Northern Mariana Islands Governor “There’s less potential for a lot of chaos with the press, and press coverage and all that. - 1:25VP Harris targets Trump on abortion ruling anniversaryReuters VideosSTORY: :: Kamala Harris takes aim at Donald Trump's role in the Supreme Court's abortion decision :: June 24, 2024 :: Phoenix, Arizona "Two years ago today, the highest court in our land took a constitutional right that had been recognized, from the people of America, from the women of America. And thereafter, in state after state laws have been proposed and passed that criminalize health care providers. You know, in Texas, they provide prison for life." "And so let's understand the connection between this issue and the elections. Because Joe Biden has been very clear, when Congress puts back in place the protections of Roe versus Wade, he will sign it into law." "You know, the people who were the leaders of this movement that got Roe to be the law of the land for 50 years, they have passed the baton to us. And the question is now, while we are carrying the baton, what are we doing with it? And I know we are taking our role and responsibilities seriously." "There are going to be many times in your life where you're going to be told that can't be done. It's never been done before. It's not time. They're not ready for it. And then this is the one I love. It's going to be a lot of hard work. Don't you listen? I eat no for breakfast."2 days ago
- 2:02Don't vote with your portfolio -wealth advisorReuters VideosSTORY: With the highly-charged election between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump approaching, von Lipsey said many investors may be trying to reposition their portfolios based on "guesses about whether tariffs will be increased" or whether "renewable energy will suddenly fall out of favor." But trying to predict the election's outcome - and how Trump or Biden's policies may affect their holdings - is a losing game, von Lipsey said. "We just won't have the clarity with which to make an investment decision headed into the election until perhaps after the election is over," he explained. Using the 2020 and 2016 elections as examples, von Lipsey said "there was a huge differentiation between what investors and the market thought going into the election and what actually happened in the markets [afterward]."3 days ago

- 1:56AI Weekly: Nvidia on top, Apple held backReuters VideosSTORY: From yet another record for Nvidia, to Apple hitting a snag in Europe, this is AI Weekly. Nvidia became the world’s most valuable firm, at least for a while. The AI chip champion overtook Microsoft, with a market value of over $3.3 trillion. Though the Windows maker later regained top spot, it’s all another sign of Nvidia’s relentless rise, with its stock price up over 150% just this year. Apple is delaying the launch of some AI products in Europe, and it’s blaming EU rules. The bloc requires it to ensure rival products and services can function with its devices. Separately, media reports say Apple is also talking to Facebook parent Meta about integrating its AI model. TikTok owner ByteDance is working with U.S. chip designer Broadcom on an AI processor to power its products. Reuters sources say the move would comply with Washington’s export controls, and secure an adequate supply of silicon for the social network. AI is running for parliament, sort of. Businessman Steve Endacott is standing in Britain's general election - with an AI-chatbot to do the talking for him. “Hi, I’m AI Steve, standing to be MP for Brighton and Hove. I’d love to hear what policies you’d like me to adopt.” Watchdogs say if Endacott wins, it will be the human, not the bot, that takes a seat. And OpenAI’s co-founder is starting his own firm. Ilya Sutskever says it will focus solely on making a model that is safe for humanity. He left OpenAI after playing a central role in the drama over the firing and rehiring of boss Sam Altman last year.3 days ago
