Mary Gray (Cheryl Ladd) is a farmer's wife living in turn-of-the-century Minnesota. Largely ignored by her husband, Jonathan (Ted Levine) -- who is infertile -- Mary struggles with a deep sense of loneliness. Jonathan, fearful of having no son to carry on the family name, concocts an odd plan: He suggests that his brother, Aaron (Lewis Smith), be allowed to impregnate Mary.
