Flower Drum Song was the eighth musical by the team of Rodgers and Hammerstein. It is based on the 1957 novel, The Flower Drum Song, by Chinese-American author C. Y. Lee. It premiered on Broadway in 1958 and was then performed in the West End and on tour. It was adapted for a 1961 musical film.

Synopsis. During the potpourri overture and opening credits, oriental figures portray a journey from Hong Kong to San Francisco aboard a cargo ship. When the action begins a young Chinese girl, Mei Li, and her father, Dr. Han Li, peer out a porthole in the ship as they sail into San Francisco harbor.
Storytelling techniques of Chinese opera depict Mei-Li’s perilous trek across the ocean, as she huddles in a ship’s hold with other refugees, her precious flower drum in hand. Eventually Mei-Li and the others arrive, breathing the fresh new air of freedom in California, U.S.A.
On November 9, 1961, the musical event of the season took place at New York’s historic Radio City Musical Hall: the highly anticipated big-screen premiere of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Flower Drum Song starring Nancy Kwan and James Shigeta.
