Back in the 1980s, a feature kicking off with the Cannon Films logo was a guarantee that you were going to get violence, nudity or bad language, and frequently a combination of all three. Yet while the movies were oftentimes resolutely low-brow, they could also be hugely entertaining – a dark and dirty alternative to the safe and sanitized pictures that Hollywood was churning out.

Electric Boogaloo is a celebration of the company’s output, and the efforts of Cannon bosses (and cousins) Menahem Golan and Yoran Globus to take on the might of the Hollywood machine by making the likes of The Last American Virgin, Hercules, Lifeforce and Superman IV, with varying degrees of success. The Go-Go Brothers in Cannes.Directed by Mark Hartley, the film follows the template of his previous efforts Not Quite Hollywood, about the Ozploitation movie scene, and Machete Maidens Unleashed, which focused on Filipino Grindhouse flicks. Like those docs, it doesn’t delve too deeply into the dark side of the industry, instead combining fantastic clips with talking heads recounting colouful anecdotes about the cousins and their creative approach to showbusiness.

And there’s much to tell about Golan and Globus, who became known as ‘The Go-Go Boys’ to some and ‘The Bad News Jews’ to others. Motivated by a genuine love of movies – especially wannabe director Golem – they made their names in Israel by pumping out low-budget comedies, most notably a hugely successful Porky’s-style flick entitled Lemon Popsicle, before turning their attention to Hollywood.

They hit the ground running, tackling any genre that might make them money. Early efforts included violent slasher Shizoid, softcore skin flick The Happy Hooker, musical disaster The Apple, and gothic horror House of the Long Shadows, which united Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing and Vincent Price, yet managed to be interminably dull.

Electric Boogaloo is a superficial examination of the Cannon story, but a hugely entertaining one. It’s a tale of two immigrants who dared to dream, who for a brief time made that dream a reality, and who have left a lasting legacy that’s low-brow trash to some, and classic Saturday night fare to others.
