The Third Lover (French: L'Œil du malin), also titled The Eye of Evil, is a 1962 French–Italian crime drama film directed by Claude Chabrol. It tells the story of a French journalist in Southern Germany who befriends a novelist and his wife and gradually begins to destroy the couple's lives.

The Third Lover is an early psychological thriller by Claude Chabrol showing him finding his true subjects: adultery, sexual jealousy, murder. Albin (Jacques Charrier) is an unsuccessful, frustrated novelist forced to report on German life from Munich for a French newspaper.

Mar 17, 2020 · Revisiting his 1962 title The Third Lover ( L’Oeil Du Malin) finds Chabrol navigating similar territories and themes he would eventually be renowned for—jealous lovers, infidelity and murder.
Writer Albin Mercier (Jacques Charrier) arrives in a small German town and becomes quickly fascinated by his wealthy neighbors, Andreas (Walther Reyer) and Hélène Hartman (Stéphane Audran), and their happy home surrounded by stone walls and gates.
It's up to the viewer to figure it all out. But that does not mean the film is in anyway confusing or unsatisfying. It's a fine example of early 60s European cinema, a mixture of enjoyable drama, artfully realized on every level. It's beautifully filmed, smartly written and very well-acted.
