Boozing children's author Greg Rawlings (Van Johnson), known as Uncle Bump, enlists the help of illustrator Martha Terryton (June Allyson), who is appalled by his womanizing ways and seeming hatred for kids. She threatens to tell the world he's a fraud, so he pretends to be a widower and the father of a troubled son (Butch Jenkins) in a scheme cooked up by his publisher (Hume Cronyn).
