Darkthrone is a Norwegian black metal band from Kolbotn, Akershus. Formed in 1986 as a death metal band named Black Death, [5] [6] in 1991 Darkthrone embraced a black metal style influenced by Bathory [7] and Celtic Frost [7] and became one of the leading bands in the Norwegian black metal scene.
Darkthrone started as a death metal band, but by the end of 1990 and the beginning of 1991, when they were rehearsing the material that would eventually become Goatlord, Nocturno Culto, Zephyrous, and Fenriz developed interest in black metal.
Darkthrone began life in the late 80s, experimenting with thrash, death & doom metal before eventually delving into the black metal genre & becoming synonymous with the style as one of the most highly regarded acts. ‘Goatlord’ was the title of what was to originally be Darkthrone’s second album.
