The Flatirons are the striking, slanted, reddish-brown sandstone formations that make up a portion of Boulder’s foothills on the west side of town. They are Boulder’s most iconic landmark, and you’ll see their likeness in business logos and artwork throughout town.
Nov 10, 2021 · Towering over the southwest of town, the Flatirons are Boulder’s most iconic rock formations. As a set of dramatic, pointed slabs, the Flatirons provide a beautiful background to the city and can easily be identified while observing the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains from any vista in the area.
The Flatirons consist of sandstone, sandstone conglomerate or arkose, of the Fountain Formation. Geologists estimate the age of these rocks as 290 to 296 million years; they were lifted and tilted into their present orientation between 35 and 80 million years ago.

This loop is popularly known as the First and Second Flatirons Loop. It travels along the Chautauqua Trail, First and Second Flatirons Trail, and the Bluebell Road Trail. The Flatirons are sandstone rock slabs that are an iconic part of Boulder’s scenery and views from the top are excellent.
The Flatirons are synonymous with Boulder and the history of rock climbing in North America. It would be hard to find another location in the country where such an extensive variety, from scrambling to hard "Head Point" routes exist so close to a major metro area.
