Childhood. Born in 1912 and raised in South Orange, New Jersey, Anthony Peter Smith used to say that his initials stood for "architect, painter, sculptor". The second of seven children, his father was a mechanical engineer for the family waterworks factory, his mother a homemaker.

May 7, 2024 · Tony Smith was an American architect, sculptor, and painter associated with Minimalism as well as Abstract Expressionism and known for his large geometric sculptures. As a child, Smith was quarantined with tuberculosis and did not emerge into public life until high school.
Smith also taught at various institutions including New York University, Cooper Union, Pratt Institute, Bennington College, and Hunter College, where he mentored artists such as Pat Lipsky . Smith was asked to teach a sculpture course at the University of Hawaii in Manoa during the summer of 1969.

He and his family have lived in Teignmouth for over twenty-five years during which time he was an education officer in Devon for 14 years, and Director of Education for over 5 years.
Smith studied drawing and painting at the Arts Student League in New York City from 1934 to 1936. Drawing eventually became an essential medium to develop ideas. He filled hundreds of pages of journals.
After the TB cleared up, Tony attended St. Francis Xavier High School, a Jesuit high school in New York City. In the spring of 1931 he attended Fordham University and then in September of that year enrolled at Georgetown University. He was disillusioned and felt no direction at Georgetown so he returned to New Jersey by in the winter of 1932.
