  1. Early life and education. Blumenthal was born into a Jewish family in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Jane ( née Rosenstock) and Martin Blumenthal. At age 17, Martin Blumenthal immigrated to the United States from Frankfurt, Germany; Jane was raised in Omaha, Nebraska, graduated from Radcliffe College, and became a social worker.
