On September 11, 1973, the armed forces staged a coup d’état. Allende died during an assault on the presidential palace, and a junta composed of three generals and an admiral, with Gen. Augusto Pinochet Ugarte as president, was installed. At the outset the junta received the support of the oligarchy and of a sizable part of the middle class.
