Jane Margaret Byrne (née Burke; May 24, 1933 – November 14, 2014) [1] was an American politician who served as the 50th mayor of Chicago from April 16, 1979, until April 29, 1983.
In her four years as mayor, she created Chicago’s first city-recognized Gay Pride Parade day, and she supported the arts in Chicago, bringing the film industry to the city and promoting various citywide and neighborhood festivals, including what would become Taste of Chicago.
