College of William and Mary. Wilson Cary Nicholas (January 31, 1761 – October 10, 1820) was an American politician who served in the U.S. Senate from 1799 to 1804 and was the 19th Governor of Virginia from 1814 to 1816.
Wilson Cary Nicholas (1761-1820) was a U.S. congressman, U.S. senator, governor of Virginia, and political protégé of Thomas Jefferson. Born in Williamsburg, he studied at the College of William and Mary until he joined the Continental army during the American Revolution.

Sheppard based his painting on an earlier one created by Gilbert Stuart circa 1805.
