Artist William Alexander produced many illustrations which shaped the vision of China that can be found in the Pavilion. Towards the end of the 18th century the popularity of the Chinese style in interior decoration and architecture was waning.

He taught at the military college at Great Marlow until 1808, when he took up the post of Keeper of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum in London.
