Life. Ma'i, born c. 1751, described himself as a hoa, or 'attendant upon the king', the son of a Ra'iatea landowner.

Portrait of Mai (Omai) (also known as Portrait of Omai, Omai of the Friendly Isles or simply Omai) is an oil-on-canvas portrait of Omai, a Polynesian visitor to England, by Sir Joshua Reynolds, completed about 1776.
Omai was inoculated against smallpox, which was endemic in England at this time, with a newly developed, but expensive and risky treatment. He met King George III, remembered Banks and Solander from Tahiti and was introduced to high society by them. The Earl of Sandwich became another patron.
