Lanoe George Hawker, VC, DSO (30 December 1890 – 23 November 1916) was a British flying ace of the First World War. Having seven credited victories, he was the third pilot to receive the Victoria Cross, the highest decoration for gallantry awarded to British and Commonwealth servicemen.
Captain Lanoe George Hawker VC DSO of No. 24 Squadron RFC. See object record. Hawker was a natural pilot and his aggressive tactics saw him become the first flying 'ace' of the RFC. On 25 July 1915, in an aircraft that he had adapted himself, he brought down three German aircraft near Ypres.
Above: Lanoe Hawker VC, DSO. IWM Q67598. By early 1910 he was fit enough to resume a military career, but this time entered the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, to train as a Royal Engineer officer. His interest in model aeroplanes continued and he also began to visit airshows.

Hawker had begun his RFC flying career with No. 6 Squadron on October 3, 1914. He hardly had a chance to meet his new squadron mates before they flew their eight B.E.s and four Farmans to Belgium on October 7.

Lanoe George Hawker was the first ace of the British Commonwealth. An aggressive combat pilot, his motto was " Attack Everything! " Flying a B.E.2c armed with a few bombs and hand grenades, he successfully attacked the Zeppelin shed at Gontrode in April 1915 and was awarded the Distinguished Service Order.
