Karl Rudolf Gerd von Rundstedt (12 December 1875 – 24 February 1953) was a German Generalfeldmarschall (Field Marshal) in the Heer (Army) of Nazi Germany during World War II. Born into a Prussian family with a long military tradition, von Rundstedt entered the Prussian Army in 1892.
Gerd von Rundstedt was a German field marshal who was one of Adolf Hitler’s ablest leaders during World War II. He held commands on both the Eastern and Western fronts, played a major role in defeating France in 1940, and led much of the opposition to the Allied offensive in the West in 1944–45.

May 23, 2018 · Field marshal Karl Rudolf Gerd von Rundstedt (1875-1953), the senior German field commander in World War II, directed the German war effort on the Western front from 1942 to 1945. Gerd von Rundstedt was born on Dec. 12, 1875, in Aschersleben near Magdeburg.
Promoted to field-marshal in the spring of 1941, von Rundstedt commanded the southern army group in the invasion of the Soviet Union. By November the offensive was bogged down and he requested a strategic withdrawal to the Mius River. Hitler refused and von Rundstedt relinquished his command.
Oct 8, 2016 · When the war started in September 1939, Von Rundstedt, in command of Heeresgruppe Süd (Army group south) participated in the attack on the main body of the Polish armed forces (Case White). He managed to prevent the Poles from retreating beyond the River Weichsel.
In August 1938, with a group of German generals, Gerd von Rundstedt opposed Hitler’s plan to invade Czechoslovakia. In July 1940, he was named Feldmarschal and commander-in-chief of Western armies as part of the invasion of France.
